Another Summer Memory From My Childhood

I have to stop doing this. For some reason lately, when I am trying to clear my mind for a minute between work, I have been looking up vintage items from my youth. Last week it was the rollerskate (see earlier blog posts)...this week, THE 1973 - 1978 PEPSI COLLECTORS GLASSES FROM MCDONALDS. Oooohhhh, how this takes me back to summers swimming at my grandmother's house. They were 99 degree days. I was learning to swim. These amazing glasses were BIG, held an entire bottle of soda WITH ice, and were the coolest thing since Wonder Bread. After getting them filled with Pepsi with our McDonalds meal, we would race home, wash them out and claim them as ours in the glasses cabinet. NO ONE WAS TO TOUCH THEM. Mine were Road Runner, Cool Cat and Pepe La Pew. My aunt Michelle had the Fog Horn - Leg Horn, Yosemite Sam, Daffy and Porky. We were cool, we were hydrated, and those were the 70's. I have a tip for McDonalds. Wanna bring back sales? BRING BACK THE REAL COLLECTORS GLASSES WITH A VALUE MEAL. People would come often to collect each one, they would feel like they were getting their money's worth with the $7.50 meal that you charge these days, and maybe, just maybe, my daughter would have a summer like mine collecting her very own glass memories that make her smile.

Nantucket Creamsicle

1 shot Orange Vodka (I like Triple Eight Orange Vodka from Nantucket)

1 shot Vanilla Vodka (again, I like Triple Eight Vanilla Vodka from Nantucket)

2 shots Ginger ale or cream soda

Splash of orange juice

Combine Blend all in a martini shaker over ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled Martini Glass. Garnish with Orange rind!

I Could Just Cry...

I found these Nike Roller Skates (circa 1980) on Etsy today...and I could have CRIED!! I had this EXACT SAME PAIR when I was 12 years old. Mine even had those weird blue-green rubber wheels that didn't match the blue stopper...just like these. Am I really this old?! I found myself staring at the photo and longing for those roller skate races down the street with my girlfriend Lisa (we were usually using them to chase bad guys during our pretend episode of "Charlies Angels"...ahhh, the good old days. Nary a worry about the seriously TWISTED ANKLE in these with no side support!) My favorite part about these is the simple design...just a darned running sneaker bolted to a roller skate base. They don't make things this stupidly simple anymore! Never the less, they are for sale if anyone is looking to bring back their youth. Please someone...buy them before I do.

This week, my cocktail Friday recipe is really for a lazy Sunday morning...after a long weekend of entertaining!! This yummy cocktail is the perfect drink to serve with your Sunday Eggs Benedict, as your guests are slowly meandering downstairs from a good night of sleep.

Ingredients

1.5 oz Good Vodka (I like Grey Goose)

3 oz tomato juice

0.5 oz lime juice

7 drops Worcestershire sauce

3 drops Tabasco sauce

freshly ground pepper

1 dash celery salt, freshly grated

Serving Instructions

Combine ingredients in glass filled with ice. Stir gently. Serve the Bloody Mary in a pint glass. Garnish with a stalk of celery and a lime wedge!

Cocktail Friday - Virgin Gorda Planters Punch

My husband and I spent a wonderful 2 weeks in St. John, BVI. While there we went on a scuba diving day trip to Virgin Gorda. After a day of Scuba diving for Barracuda and coral we climbed through the Baths of Virgin Gorda and stopped at a little beach bar for THE MOST DELICIOUS PLANTERS PUNCH EVER!! I asked the bartender for the recipe...and have made this at home ever since. It is one of our favorites!

VIRGIN GORDA PLANTERS PUNCH

Yields 6 servings

Ingredients
1 cup white rum
1 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 oranges)
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup bottled guava nectar
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/4 teaspoon Angostura bitters
6 cinnamon sticks
6 fresh pineapple slices
6 orange slices
6 maraschino cherries
1/4 teaspoon grated fresh nutmeg (optional...but amazing!)

Preparation
Combine first 7 ingredients in a pitcher. Serve over ice. Garnish each serving with 1 cinnamon stick, 1 pineapple slice, 1 orange slice, and 1 cherry. Sprinkle with nutmeg, if desired.

Summer Iced Tea Cocktail

2 Shots Citrus Vodka (I like Grey Goose Le Citron)

2 Shots Sweetened Iced Tea

1 Shot Limoncello

Grated Zest of 1 Lemon

Mint Leaves

Mix the liquid ingredients together in a tall pitcher and stir briskly. Pour in a tall glass over ice and garnish with lemon slices, sprinkled lemon zest on top and mint leaves.

Happy 4th of July all! (and its my birthday today...UGH. I am a Yankee Doodle Preppy!) In honor of my birthday and the many great Fireworks Celebrations that went to under the Hatchshell on the Charles River in Boston, I decided to make todays cocktail "The Boston Pops" Martini. The rim is coated in Cherry Pop Rocks to make it pop in your mouth like fireworks! Joe Perdicaro of the Zebra Bistro and Wine Bar in Medfield, Ma., developed this red, white and blue cocktail just for FineLiving.com, drawing his inspiration from the nearby Boston Pops and their nationally broadcast 4th of July concert and fireworks show. I just had to share this great one with our Girly-Twirly Girls!

BOSTON POPS MARTINI
Ingredients:
lime wedge
2 packages cherry Pop Rocks
2 1/2 oz. cranberry vodka
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao

Instructions:
1. Start with a chilled cocktail glass and rub the rim with a lime wedge. (or dip rim in lime juice such as Rose's).
2. Open a pack of cherry flavored Pop Rocks candy and spread on a small plate or napkin. Press rim of the glass into the candy to coat rim.
3. In a shaker filled with ice, add cranberry vodka, shake and strain into prepared glass.
4. Slowly and carefully pour blue curacao in the middle of the glass, allowing it to settle in the glass. You should have two distinct layers
5. Add a small splash of lemon/lime soda and enjoy with a sparkler in your hand.

Transfusion Cocktail

Ingredients
2 oz. Vodka
8 oz. Grape Juice
1 splash Ginger Ale
1 wedge Lime

Glass type: Highball or Martini
Directions: Add ice in a tall glass, mix the vodka and grape juice together and top it off with a splash of ginger ale. This yummy sparkling grape cocktail is very refreshing for a warm summer afternoon by the pool!

Whew! These weeks are just flying by....its "Cocktail Friday" again girls! This week I am featuring something super refreshing, as it is "Hotter Than Dutch Love" (as my grandmother would say) here in the Northeast today. I need a dip in the pool and about 3 of these!

Frosty Lemon Martini

Ingredients
1 tablespoon sugar
Lemon wedge
1 cup crushed ice
6 tablespoons chilled lemon-flavored vodka (3 oz.; see notes)
2 tablespoons chilled lemon-flavored liqueur (1 oz.; see notes)
4 teaspoons lemon juice
2 thin strips (3 in. long) lemon peel

Preparation
1) Pour sugar onto a small, rimmed plate. Rub rims of two martini glasses with lemon wedge to moisten, then dip rims into sugar to coat (see notes).
2) Place ice in a cocktail shaker. Add vodka, liqueur, and lemon juice. Shake until mixture is very cold, about 10 seconds. Strain into glasses. Garnish each with a twist of lemon peel and serve!

Cocktail Friday...a Throwback For My College Roomies!

This weeks "Cocktail Friday" recipe is in honor of my 3 great college roommates...Kristin, Chrissy and Mary. Nary a Friday night would pass at UMass Amherst without a Frozen Mudslide at Mike's Westview Cafe. Needless to say, nary a Friday would pass without a great "after 10 Mudslides" story!! In honor of Chrisbo, Kristin and Maisy I raise my frozen glass to you and say, "Cheers!"

World's Best Frozen Mudslide

Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz Vodka (Absolut)
1 1/2 oz Bailey's irish cream
1 1/2 oz Kahlua
8 cubes Ice
1 1/2 oz Cream
1 scoop Vanilla ice-cream (Häagen-Dazs makes it best!!)
2 scoops Chocolate ice-cream (Häagen-Dazs makes it best!!)

Mixing instructions:
Begin by crushing the 8 ice cubes in a blender. When ice is finely crushed, add the remaining ingredients and blend for 45 seconds on blender's highest setting. Drizzle Chocolate syrup around your glass first, then pour Mudslide mixture into glass gently. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings and serve immediately.

Spring, spring, its a wonderful thing. And, what is my favorite thing to do in the spring? Pack up our NEW Insulated Cooler Market Basket with sandwiches, tortellini salad and micro-sodas and head to the park or the beach. A couple of ice packs in the bottom and a blanket on top and you are ready for the Boston Pops Concert, watching the FAGAWI Yacht Race or a regular day of fun and sun in the sand with your friends. A Farewell To Splashy...

We lost our little family goldfish "Splashy" over the weekend...(we got her LAST weekend, she lasted 5 days.) So, as per request by my daughter, this is an "Ode To Splashy"...please bow your heads.

Splashy was a really good fish
Until my mom decided to clean her dish.
She was my new pet, you see.
Mom said, "Trust your baby to me!"
The job filled her with delight
But soon became a giant fright.
We fed her and loved her over the week.
But turns out her little heart was bleak.
We watched her not eating in her bowl.
That's when her stomach started to roll.
We watched her take her final breath
As she swam down to her death.
There was a silent hush
As we made the final flush.
When mom told me that she died
I bowed my little head and cried.

Ingredients
1 part white cranberry juice
1 part berry vodka
1/2 part raspberry liqueur (recommended: Chambord)
1/2 part Limoncello

Directions
To a shaker full of ice, add all ingredients. Shake well and pour into chilled martini glasses. Enjoy by the parade in your lawn chair!

2 parts Grey Goose vodka

1/2 part Drambuie

¾ part honey

½ part hot water

6 mint leaves (Mint leaves or piece of honeycomb for garnish)

In the bottom of a cocktail shaker add honey, hot water and mint leaves; muddle well. Add ice, Grey Goose vodka and Drambuie. Shake vigorously until outside of shaker is frosted and beaded with sweat. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with mint leaves or honeycomb and ENJOY!
